How It Works
XpressConnect is comprised of two components:
The XpressConnect Wizard is the portion that executes on the user's machine to perform the configuration and migration.
The Cloudpath Administrative Console is the management console used by the network administrator to customize the behavior of the Wizard.
The following sequence provides an overview of how these components work together:
 |
1. Network Administrator Specifies Configuration
The network administrator specifies the configuration necessary to access the network in the management console,
called the Cloudpath Administrative Console. Since you have better things to do than installing
management consoles, we host this web-based application for you at
https://xpc.cloudpath.net. Not only does this make initial turn-up
a snap, it also eliminates the need to apply patches and updates over time.
Once the network requirements are specified, the network
administrator downloads a deployment package (TAR file) containing the customized XpressConnect Wizard.

2. Network Administrator Deploys XpressConnect Wizard
The network administrator unzips the deployment package and places the XpressConnect Wizard on a web server within their environment or onto a CD.
Users will access the wizard from this location. Once deployed, the wizard is completely freestanding and is
not dependent on the Cloudpath Administrative Console.
The most common case is to deploy the XpressConnect Wizard onto a web server that is accessible to users via an open SSID.
The open SSID is often named something like "Sample University Help" or even "Start Here For Wireless".
Then, the ACLs for the open SSID are modified to grant access to the web server.
Finally, the captive portal page on the WLAN controller is modified to redirect users on the open SSID to the web server.

3. XpressConnect Wizard Migrates Users
New users access the open SSID and are redirected by
the WLAN controller to the XpressConnect Wizard. The wizard loads, performs the configuration, and migrates
the user to the secure SSID. After the XpressConnect Wizard completes, the wizard shuts down, leaving the
operating system properly configured to automatically attach in the future.
In the future, if the user is unable to attach to the secure network
for any reason (deletes SSID, new machine, password changed, network changed), the user simply accesses the open
SSID and re-runs the XpressConnect Wizard.
